In the dreary depths of the night, two police officers make their way through the village. Their garments draping in the wind, guided only by the ethereal source of light that presides above them; George Poole’s use of a muted and restricted colour palette intensifies the sense of mystery in this composition. Poole invites us to scrutinise this scene closely and decode its mystique: much like the figures he placed in this painting.

This caption was written by Charles Obiri-Yeboah.
