Trees from a house roof: autumn
HITCHENS, Ivon
In 1946 the artist explained 'in landscape I find a square-shaped painting usually unsatisfactory because the natural flow of the horizontals is checked. Therefore I often use a long shape'. This representational landscape utilises this format to evoke movement along the curving path from the left, across the foreground and into the distance at the right. It was purchased by Margaret Davies in 1950.
