Born in Blackwood her first ambition was to become a biology teacher, but a scholarship to Trinity Music College left to her professional debut at Welsh National Opera in 1962 as Cherubino in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. She rapidly became a star of the operatic world, celebrated for the purity and tonal beauty of her voice, as well as her flawless technique. She was awarded a CBE in 1982, followed by the DBE in 1993.
