People and Ystrad Rhondda
ZOBOLE, Ernest
© Manual Zobole/Amgueddfa Cymru
This is a painting of Ystrad in the Rhondda valley. Ernest Zobole was born in the village and continued to be inspired by the area for the rest of his life. The three figures in the centre of the painting have been identified as the artist, his wife Christine and their young son Manuel. Whereas most of his contemporaries focused on gritty realism, Zobole often uncovered an other-worldly mystery in his immediate surroundings.
