A baby's first five minutes, Port Jefferson
This work shows the first moments of a new life and the connection between mother and child. The image comes from Eve Arnold’s iconic 1959 photo essay A Baby’s Momentous First Five Minutes, which highlights the intimate drama of childbirth. Arnold documented defining social movements of the 20th century, famously capturing candid photographs of Hollywood celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe. She also worked as an activist, documenting Malcolm X’s Black Power Movement, where she focused on the movement’s Muslim women.
