The Wound is a Portal

GESIYE,

© Gesiye/Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales
×

In The Wound is a Portal eight individuals who identified as Black Trinidadians volunteered to have their bodies tattooed by the artist Gesiye. The resulting conversations encouraged individual and community healing to address the generational trauma of slavery and the way this trauma has impacted on the African diaspora’s relationship to the land. The installation comprises eight photographic portraits, an animation of the tattoos linking the participants together, and a film narrated by Gesiye that accompanies the artist on a physical and metaphorical journey from the sea to the centre of the island of Trinidad.
