Durga attacking a demon

KALIGHAT WORKSHOP,

Kalighat Art is a form of folk art inspired by Pattachitras, prevalent in Bengal and across India for over a millennium. Both art forms involve trained and amateur artists, often family members collaborating on creating art.

The name "Kalighat '' is derived from the Kalighat market situated near the Kalighat Temple along the BuriGanga River, historically a significant trade centre in East India for centuries. Initially, this art style depicted 'History Painting,' later evolving into 'Genre Painting,' capturing the Babu Culture during the early colonial period in Bengal. Here, intriguing parallels emerge between Western art and Kalighat art.

While the themes and stories depicted in Kalighat paintings have evolved, the artistic style has remained consistent over time.
