Head of Augustus John (1878-1961)
© Estate of Sir Jacob Epstein/Tate/Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales
Shortly after his arrival in London from Paris in 1905, Epstein became acquainted with the sitter. John executed two portrait etchings of the sculptor in 1907. Epstein recalled: 'John's head had plenty of dignity but there was much more to it than that, and I wanted to capture a certain wildness, an untamed quality that is the essence of the man'.
