The wounded Amazon

Welsh-born John Gibson was a key figure in neo-classical sculpture. Unusually, this sculpture depicts a strong yet bleeding female figure - a woman warrior. While the pose is based on women Gibson saw in Rome’s streets, it hints at the violence he witnessed there and his fear of being stabbed.
