The Close Observer and Rattling Knot are two banner paintings that can be displayed together on a painted mural background connecting and extending the compositions. They represent post-industrial landscapes, devoid of plants and trees and populated with strange figures and surrealist imagery. The artist Prabhakar Pachpute grew up in Chandrapur, central India where three generations of his family worked in the region’s coal mines. His work often explores the traces of the global mining industry, creating other-worldly environments that are powerful and imaginative evocations of the exploitation of the worker and the destruction of nature.
