Wood & Sons, Ltd

We’re working on releasing this image.

Wheel thrown earthenware vase, footring, lower half narrow and slightly waisted, upper half with swelling sides, slightly narrowing at rim. Pronounced throwing lines in interior of vase, faint on exterior of vase. Vase carved with four large evenly spaced loops pendant from rim, reaching to almost the bottom of the vase. Each loop progressively broadens from rim, crosses 1/3 from its bottom where the lower part of each loop's sides is feathered with parallel strokes. Large S shaped incision across bottom of each loop. Warm yellow/orange glaze, pooled in incisions, lighter around edges of carving.

Rhiannon Gwyn was raised in Sling - a quarrying village in north Wales. Her work reflects the rugged beauty of her home landscape by using the physical qualities of Welsh slate and other locally sourced materials. Porcelain bowls, coloured with a glaze made of local gorse flower, are nestled upon slate shelves that have been shaped through a process of heating and melting.
