Flowers and silk, blue symphony

BOMBERG, David

© The Estate of David Bomberg. All Rights Reserved. DACS 224/Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales
×

Bomberg was trained at the Slade School and initially associated with the Vorticists. During the 1920s he developed a more naturalistic and expressionistic style. In a period of depression during the 1940s his wife encouraged him to paint flowers. These became progressively more vibrant and here their vase has disappeared in an abstract riot of colour. Bomberg enjoyed little success, but was an influential teacher and is now recognised as a major figure in British modernism.
