Plate, cream-coloured earthenware with clear glaze, foot ring and cushion-moulded profile, plain rim; decorated with evenly-spaced stylised clover leaves hand-painted overglaze in black and green enamels surrounded by free-form dots and loops, between these are groups of five short parallel, horizontal brushstroke lines, hand-painted overglaze in black, around the rim is a transfer-printed band of interlaced 'S' shapes forming a schematic rope pattern.

1899 - 1972 Apprenticed aged 13 to local potteries, before joining A J Wilkinson Royal Staffordhsire Potteries in 1916; trained in all aspects of pottery including design and modelling; under the tutelage of factory owner Colley Shorter, attended Sculpture course at Royal College of Art; went on to become Art Director of A J Wilkinson at age 31; devised Bizarre and Fantasque ranges, inspired by Cubism.
