Deep Form
Casanovas, Claudí
Catalan artist Claudí Casanovas feels a strong emotional connection to the earth. Wherever he works, he explores the character of the local clays. He made Deep Form in Japan, at the studio of ceramic artist Ryoji Koie, using a mixture of Japanese clays. This work embodies his response to that particular environment and also the international friendship between two artists. Casanovas’s work tests the physical and aesthetic limits of clay. He uses organic materials, metals and metal oxides to create openings and unusual colours. He cuts and sandblasts the surface, giving the appearance of extreme weathering or powerful geological processes.
