The Bay of Naples

JONES, Thomas
The Bay of Naples
Image: By permission of Amgueddfa Cymru — Museum Wales
 Zoom

This painting depicts Naples and its bay with Mount Vesuvius in the left background and the Sorrento Peninsula faintly visible on the horizon line. The castel Sant'Elmo and two of the ubiquitous pine trees frame the composition. This classical landscape, inspired by Claude and Wilson, was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1784.
