Trees with G-shaped Form I

SUTHERLAND, Graham

© Estate of Graham Sutherland/Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales
×

Towards the end of his life the artist frequently revisited West Wales, where he often stayed at Benton Castle above the river Cleddau, which belonged to friends. On a beach nearby he came upon the tree with its massive gnarled root formation which provided the principal motif in the present work. The distorted central shape contrasts with the symmetrical uprights of the tree trunks.
