The Cathedral, The Southern Faces / Uluru (Ayers Rock)
ANDREWS, Michael
Uluru is a site of exceptional spiritual significance to the local Ananga, First Nations people of Australia. They believe that all things were created in the ‘time before time’, the Dreamtime. During Dreamtime ancestral spirits came to Earth as humans and shaped the land, plants and animals, before returning to spirits in the form of animals, stars, hills and other objects. Uluru is said to hold one such ancestral spirit. Michael Andrews named Uluru ‘Cathedral’ in his paintings, recognising its spiritual significance.
