After the Swim. Group portrait (ii). From the series ''Martha''
DAVEY, Sian
Sian Davey embarked on the series, Martha, when her stepdaughter turned 16 years old. Working collaboratively with Martha, Davey wanted to explore the complexities of the moment when a child is on the cusp of becoming a woman. She also wanted to explore the mother-daughter relationship between Martha and herself within that moment. Davey’s portrait of teenage femininity is beautifully captured in this image of Martha and her friends gathered on the banks of a river following an impromptu swim. They stand defiantly in front of the camera, both confident and vulnerable in equal measure.
