Kalighat Art is a form of folk art inspired by Pattachitras, prevalent in Bengal and across India for over a millennium. Both art forms involve trained and amateur artists, often family members collaborating on creating art.

The name "Kalighat '' is derived from the Kalighat market situated near the Kalighat Temple along the BuriGanga River, historically a significant trade centre in East India for centuries. Initially, this art style depicted 'History Painting,' later evolving into 'Genre Painting,' capturing the Babu Culture during the early colonial period in Bengal. Here, intriguing parallels emerge between Western art and Kalighat art.

While the themes and stories depicted in Kalighat paintings have evolved, the artistic style has remained consistent over time.

Glyn Baines left his family farm to study at Wrexham School of Art and Cardiff Teacher Training College. He later taught art at Ysgol Y Berwyn, in Bala, from 1966 until his retirement in 1989. He won the Gold Medal at Lle Celf, National Eisteddfod 2015 for his collection of abstract collages. These striking compositions of layered paper have attracted critical acclaim and demonstrate the unique qualities of paper as an artist’s material. Baines described his work as a celebration of colour and life.
