Floating Figure

WESCHKE, Karl
Floating Figure

A lifeless human body emerges from the shallow waters of a sandy beach. In Weschke’s work people are often isolated in a desolate landscape, engaged in a terrifying battle for survival. The bleak portrayal of humanity echoes the work of Francis Bacon, whom Weschke first met in St Ives, Cornwall in 1959. Weschke served in the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. After coming to Britain in 1945 as an exhausted and shell-shocked Prisoner of War, he was eventually granted a place at art college.
