Whilst at the Slade School of Art in London, Gwen John would have studied sculpture in the Antique Room. In Paris, her interest in sculpture continued after meeting the artist Auguste Rodin. This is a study of an antique marble in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Rodin based a figure in one of his sculptures on the same work.
