Beechwood by moonlight
EVANS, Merlyn Oliver
Born in Llandaff, in 1913 Evans and his family moved to Rutherglen in Scotland. He studied at Glasgow School of Art. Painted in tempera upon panel, this work derives from drawing of 1930. He recalled it as: 'An abstraction of lyrical character...During evening walks in Rutherglen I frequently passed by a beechwood. The autumnal mood and colour of the picture (as well as the texture of the smooth silver beech trunks, and the crisp brown of the autumn leaves) originate from this beechwood by Moonlight'.
