This work began as a drawing done at the church in Meudon and was worked up later in the studio. Gwen John would sit at the back of the church sketching fellow parishioners. As a result many of these numerous works from 1910s to 1920s show figures from behind or from the side. These are not studies for oil paintings, but finished works in their own right.
