Begun in 1882/83, this unfinished work is painted on a white ground, giving its colours a particular intensity. It belonged to the French art critic Roger Marx and was purchased by Margaret Davies from his sale in Paris in 1914.

GB. WALES. Aberfan, The Aberfan disaster was a catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil in the Welsh village of Aberfan, on 21st October 1966, killing 116 children and 28 adults. It was caused by a build-up of water in the accumulated rock and shale, which suddenly started to slide downhill in the form of slurry. 1966.
