Nature and the world around us have inspired generations of artists over the centuries. The landscape has remained a major and popular theme in art from the 17th Century to the present day; it’s something that can connect us with our locality and give us a sense of home.

Contemporary art has often highlighted environmental issues, as the world we live in changes. Artists tell the story of the here and now, offering us a narrative for our experiences.

We’re looking for new works of visual art to add to the discussions around plastic pollution in our oceans. Contributors will use Tim Pugh and Mike Perry’s artworks as a starting point or reference to create a new work of art in response.

These commissions will be hosted on Celf ar y Cyd and we are very interested in the voices of those approaching visual culture from different angles, and no professional art background is required to apply. The final contributions can be presented in any artistic medium as long as they can be embedded on the website, for example, video or images.

Successful applicants will also have support from the Celf ar y Cyd curatorial and project teams at National Library Wales and Amgueddfa Cymru to pull together your contribution.

A fee of £600 is available for each successful contribution (which amounts to roughly 2 days’ work). Of those received, two submissions will be awarded.

Application process

Please email your proposal to sara.treble-parry@museumwales.ac.uk and include the following:

  • A proposal for your idea. This can be a short description of up to 200 words, or simply a sketch, a mood board, or a few images – whatever you feel will showcase your idea best.
  • Please include your name and preferred pronouns, home address, contact details and a brief paragraph about yourself.

Deadline

Please submit your proposal no later than 5pm on 9 September 2024.

The project board will review the proposals within 20 working days and will decide which they would like to commission in full. In total, 2 artistic responses will be commissioned.

If you are thinking of submitting a proposal and have further questions, access requirements or requests, please contact sara.treble-parry@museumwales.ac.uk via email or by ringing 029 2057 3232.
